Choosing a Wilderness Program
By Abbie Squier
- 2 minutes read - 295 wordsDo the research. Take some time to think about how your child has been raised. What type of environment have they been raised with? Could they benefit from outdoor activity? Would eating healthy and removing technology help refocus their choices?
Go online and look at wilderness and nature based programs. Do not just admit your child to the first program you find. There are many good and many bad programs and it is best to find out as much information as you can. Check out their history and their therapists. Make a few phone calls. Speak with them and explain your situation and ask for their direction. These programs have so much to offer, not just in the treatment for your child but also in their experience, strength, and hope. They understand and can help you find great placement.
If it doesn’t feel right, it’s not right for you. Move on and make the next call.
The choice for an outdoor overnight program can be scary. Your child is at risk, not only being in the woods, but being away from their comfort zone. If your adolescent has behavioral issues at home, they will have behavioral issues in treatment. In well-established wilderness programs, these situations are handled professionally and safely but will not always be comfortable. Ask about how your adolescent will be handled. Ask about the activities, the food, the sleeping arrangements, and anything that will help you make your best decision.
Wilderness programs are pricey. They are full care and therapy for your adolescent. Know that it may take more than one trip to the woods to curve behavior. The longer the treatment option the better the chances of a full recovery.
Ask questions. Do the research. Make phone calls. Knowledge is power.
